Arts Management (MA)

Program Description

Arts Management is a developing field established to meet the ever-growing demand for leadership and organizational expertise within arts and cultural organizations, both private and public. Arts managers bridge the worlds of performing and visual arts with applied managerial, financial, and programmatic skills.

The Arts Management program at George Mason University is excited to offer an online Master’s Degree in Arts Management. Providing a high-quality education is key to our mission at Mason.

All online courses are designed and taught by experienced faculty who also work in the field as managing directors, chief financial officers, arts lawyers, event planners, fundraisers, marketing professionals, cultural heritage facilitators, among others. They work at leading theaters, performing arts centers, museums, cultural heritage sites and as arts consultants.

Women and Gender Studies (Graduate Certificate)

Program Description

This program is available 100% online but also includes hybrid and on campus course offerings. This 15-credit graduate certificate in women and gender studies enables students interested in an academic career to enrich their research and analytical skills. Students interested in a professional career are prepared to address gender-related challenges in both domestic and global settings. The certificate adds an area of specialization to any graduate degree, giving students a competitive edge in the professional world. The core courses provide students a groundwork in transnational feminisms, feminist theory, critical race theory, and queer theory. Electives allow students to select from a range of interdisciplinary classes across the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Foreign Languages (MA)

Program Description

The MA in Foreign Languages with a concentration in Spanish offers students an opportunity to study a wide variety of topics from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Coursework includes the academic study of the language, literature, and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world (including the US) as well as applied linguistics, cultural studies, critical pedagogy, film studies, and Latinx studies. Students can choose to simultaneously earn the graduate certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education, which provides expertise on the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and cultural characteristics of Spanish-speakers in the US; heritage language educational policy; and social justice-oriented, antiracist approaches to teaching Spanish. Coursework can count for BOTH the MA and the certificate.

Spanish Heritage Language Education (Graduate Certificate)

Program Description

The Graduate Certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education (SHLE) is an innovative interdisciplinary program that prepares educators and affiliated professionals to advocate for heritage speakers of Spanish as well as to design and implement teaching materials and curricula for heritage speakers of Spanish. The SHLE certificate, which can be completed fully online, will provide you with expertise on the educational needs of heritage speakers of Spanish as well as antiracist, social justice-oriented approaches to teaching Spanish. You’ll also learn about current Latinx and Latin American literature, culture, film, and television, and how to effectively incorporate them into Spanish curricula.

Music Education (MM)

Program Description

The School of Music at George Mason University is happy to offer an online Master’s Degree in Music Education.  Providing a high-quality education is key to our mission at Mason, and all online courses are designed and taught by experienced Mason faculty who are well-versed in the areas of teaching and scholarship.

It is our goal to provide academic choices for today’s music educators, and our graduate program offers full online degrees with thesis and non-thesis options.  Hybrid options include the same high-quality online courses combined with on campus Orff and Kodaly coursework, which is offered during the summer semesters.

Computer Game Design (BFA)

Program Description

The BFA in Computer Game Design enables students to focus on the artistic components of computer game design while providing them with the technical skills prerequisite to the field.  Required courses include computer science, art and visual technology, music, the humanities, and computer game design. The required internship provides students with practical experience that enhances their employability post-graduation. Students study both the sciences and the arts, all in a revolving-role team-based, project-based new pedagogical environment.

Digital Public Humanities (Graduate Certificate)

Program Description

Digital tools and resources are transforming the ways in which we research, interpret, and communicate. This graduate certificate trains students in a wide range of digital tools that are in increasingly high demand in humanities careers. Students will use these tools to develop digital projects and enhance their professional portfolios, and an internship with the Smithsonian Institution will help students gain professional experience. Internships will be coordinated remotely, allowing students to work from any location.
