Program Description

The MA in Foreign Languages with a concentration in Spanish offers students an opportunity to study a wide variety of topics from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Coursework includes the academic study of the language, literature, and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world (including the US) as well as applied linguistics, cultural studies, critical pedagogy, film studies, and Latinx studies. Students can choose to simultaneously earn the graduate certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education, which provides expertise on the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and cultural characteristics of Spanish-speakers in the US; heritage language educational policy; and social justice-oriented, antiracist approaches to teaching Spanish. Coursework can count for BOTH the MA and the certificate.

  • SPAN 502, Hispanic Sociolinguistics, 3
  • SPAN 510, Methods of Literary and Cultural Studies, 3

Students must take the core courses within their first 15 credits.

 

5 Courses in Latino, Latin American, or Spanish cultures, literatures, or linguistics (18 credits): Select any five courses with the SPAN subject code

Electives

  • Select three elective courses of 3 credits each in consultation with an advisor
  • Electives can include additional courses in Latin American or Spanish culture, linguistics, or literature; courses with the subject code FRLN; up to 6 credits of courses in related fields; and up to 6 credits of thesis research and writing.
  • Students who do not complete their thesis during one semester of SPAN 799 will need to register for additional credits. Independent studies courses are not available for graduate students of Spanish.
