Program Description

Assistive technology (AT) refers to any device that provides greater independence for those with disabilities, including assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices. Designed to develop professionals who can effectively implement, assess, and research applications of AT, this master’s program prepares educators and other professionals to work with individuals with disabilities, service providers, and family members. Graduates of this program will use assistive technology to help individuals function more effectively in school, home, work, and community environments.

Careers

Students who completed the Assistive Technology graduate programs at Mason have been offered positions such as AT Coordinator, AT Assessment Team Lead, AT Trainer, Sales Representatives for AT vendors, and AT Specialists within government agencies, school systems, private consulting practices, and community outreach organizations.

Please note the Virginia Department of Education does not award teacher licensure in the area of assistive technology or professional certification related to assistive technology. However, students employed in a school system who complete this master’s program may qualify for a pay band increase, based on specific school system requirements.

Students pursuing this degree may take additional face-to-face courses to complete Mason’s PhD in Education. Courses taken for the MEd may count toward requirements in the PhD program.
