Program Description
The School of Music at George Mason University is happy to offer an online Master’s Degree in Music Education. Providing a high-quality education is key to our mission at Mason, and all online courses are designed and taught by experienced Mason faculty who are well-versed in the areas of teaching and scholarship.
It is our goal to provide academic choices for today’s music educators, and our graduate program offers full online degrees with thesis and non-thesis options. Hybrid options include the same high-quality online courses combined with on campus Orff and Kodaly coursework, which is offered during the summer semesters.

A Master of Music opens up a wide range of career paths, depending on your specialization—performance, composition, education, conducting, music technology, musicology, etc. Graduates from this program enjoy careers as Professional Musicians, Composers, Arrangers, Music Directors, Studio Artists, College Music Instructor, K–12 Music Teacher (with licensure), Private Music Instructor, Music Producer, Audio Engineer and Sound Designer.

Tuition & Financial Aid
Please Note: In addition to the tuition and fees described above, various course and lab fees may be assessed depending on the course(s) in which the student is enrolled. Please refer to the Students Accounts Office website for more information on tuition and fees.

For information regarding grants, tuition waivers and other merit aid, please inquire with your graduate department. Additionally, consider speaking to your current employer about tuition reimbursement for graduate study.

To be accepted to the School of Music, one must complete an application for admission to George Mason University. Upon completion, applicants will be given a link to SlideRoom to submit their School of Music materials and register for an audition date.
Required Materials
Please compile the following materials to be submitted on the University application and SlideRoom.
- One to two page Goals Statement
- Philosophy of Music Education Statement (Music Education only)
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (unofficial copies can be uploaded to the online application and considered for admissions purposes).
- Resume
- TOEFL test scores for international applicants whose native language is not English. Unless you have studied and received a degree from a college or university in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand.
